A lawyer working in the defense team of a prominent Iraqi politician was assassinated in Baghdad on Thursday evening.
Walid al-'Izawi, a member of the team defending MP Adnan al-Dulaimi and his sons and members of his guard, died in an IED blast that targeted his vehicle, according to a statement issued in Arabic by the Conference of the People of Iraq.
Al-Dulaimi is the head of the Iraqi Tawafuq Front, the largest Sunni Arab bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, and the general secretary of the Conference of the People of Iraq, one of the three parties that make up the Front. He and two of his sons and members of his guard are facing legal charges of involvement with armed groups and links to car bombings. Dulaimi’s bloc has dismissed the charges as politically motivated.
